What is the JRWA?
The Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA) is Stage 3 of the Job Ready Program — and the most significant. A TRA-registered assessor visits your actual workplace to observe you performing your trade tasks in a real environment. This is not a test in a classroom or training centre; it happens at your job site with real tools, real materials and real conditions.
The JRWA assesses whether you meet the units of competency defined for your ANZSCO trade code. The assessor watches you work, asks technical questions, and may review your previous work. The result determines whether you proceed to the final assessment (JRFA) and ultimately your skilled visa application.
How to Prepare for Your JRWA
Know your trade competencies
Review the units of competency for your ANZSCO code. Ensure you can confidently perform and explain each one. TRA's website lists the specific competencies for each trade.
Prepare your workplace
Ensure your workplace has the tools, materials and safety equipment required for your trade. The assessor expects a professional, safe working environment.
Organise your evidence portfolio
Compile photos, project records, and evidence of trade work you have performed over your JRE period. This supports your assessment.
Brief your employer
Make sure your employer or supervisor is available on assessment day and understands their role. They should be prepared to answer questions about your work.
Practice explaining your process
Assessors often ask you to explain what you are doing and why. Practice describing your trade process clearly and confidently.
If You Don't Pass the JRWA
Don't panic — a first-attempt JRWA result of "not yet competent" is not the end of the road.
- TRA will provide a detailed report identifying which competencies you did not meet
- You can address the identified gaps through additional training or practice
- You may reapply for a second JRWA with the same assessor or a different one
- There is an additional fee for a repeat JRWA assessment
