Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) — Permanent Residence Visa Guide
The Employer Nomination Scheme visa (Subclass 186) is Australia's primary employer-sponsored permanent residence visa. It allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia permanently when nominated by an approved Australian employer for a genuine, ongoing position. The visa is granted via three streams: Temporary Residence Transition (TRT), Direct Entry (DE), and Labour Agreement.
Three Streams of the Subclass 186 Visa
Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream
- For 482 visa holders who have worked 2+ years full-time with the same employer
- No skills assessment required in most cases
- Must continue in the same occupation with the same employer
- Age limit: under 45 (exemptions apply for high earners and certain occupations)
- English: Competent English (IELTS overall 6.0, minimum 6.0 in each band)
- Processing time: typically 6–9 months
- Fee: AUD 4,910 (main applicant, from 1 July 2026)
Direct Entry (DE) Stream
- For skilled workers outside Australia or with limited Australian work experience
- Skills assessment mandatory
- Minimum 3 years relevant skilled work experience
- Age limit: under 45
- English: Competent English (IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 each band)
- Processing time: approximately 6–9 months (17–20 months for some occupations)
- Fee: AUD 4,910 (main applicant)
Labour Agreement Stream
- For workers sponsored by employers with an approved labour agreement
